The Real Problem with KmacAnalyzer

It’s stuck in the past

The biggest issue I kept running into was that Adobe pulled the plug on Shockwave back in 2019. If you’ve tried to run KmacAnalyzer recently, you know the pain… Most browsers just refuse to load it anymore. Even when you find workarounds, you’re constantly fighting security warnings and compatibility issues.

And let’s be honest; even when Shockwave did work properly, it was never great. It was clunky, ate up system resources like crazy, and had more security holes than I cared to think about. I remember those days when loading a single Shockwave app could bring your whole browser to its knees.

The proprietary trap

Then there’s the whole proprietary software thing that really got under my skin. You can’t peek under the hood, you can’t fix bugs yourself, and you’re completely at the mercy of whoever made it. Need it to work on Linux? Too bad. Want to tweak something for your specific measurement setup? Not happening.

This kind of vendor lock-in is especially frustrating when you’re dealing with measurement data that you need to access years later. What happens when the company stops supporting the software? Your data becomes essentially trapped.

Why I Built My Web Viewer

What I ended up building is actually pretty straightforward. Instead of fighting with outdated plugins and proprietary formats, I decided to use standard web technologies that just work everywhere. Now someone can open my tool on their phone, their Chromebook, their ancient Windows laptop; it doesn’t matter. The fact that it processes everything client-side was really important to me too. No worries about uploading sensitive measurement data to some random server. It’s fast, it’s private, and it doesn’t depend on anyone else’s infrastructure staying online. Plus, when browsers evolve or new devices come out, my viewer will likely just keep working. Try saying that about anything built on Shockwave! It’s one of those cases where the “simple” modern solution ends up being way more robust than the fancy proprietary alternative ever was. Sometimes the old way really is just the old way, not the better way.
